Preparation day. Feeling a little stressed but I always do before a trip. Just trying to make sure everything is in order and that we don't forget anything.

My brother, Nick's, birthday today. I wish we could be celebrating in person. We'll do some Skype Yahtzee tonight, though, which will be fun.
Jacob and I went to visit our friends, Brandin and Preston, and their new little baby. Brandin actually had to go to a doctor's appointment so I got to hang with Jacob and Preston. Preston is Jacob's age. They hung out pretty quietly the whole time. We made it outside, too. They have a cute little yard with lots of nice growing things. It was nice. Made me want more gardens at our place. But I don't want to invest that time or energy myself here. Alas. I hope someday to have some nice gardens.

Day 289

Yesterday, we were Skyping with my family and one of my brothers asked if Jacob knew how old he was. I said I didn't know because we don't really talk about it with him. So, I turn to him and ask, "Jacob, do you know how old you are?" And he promptly answers, "Two and a half." I was taken aback, for sure. I have never heard him say anything about his age before. Then it came it up to ask him if he knew how to spell his name. He answers, "J-A-C-O-B". Alright then.
We started the morning with some French toast casserole. Yum, yum. We then went to Oaks Park Amusement Park with a friend. There were some little kid rides. At first Jacob wasn't too sure about them. He got on the Carousel (the white tiger) but was clutching me the whole time. Then we watched our friend, Moses, go on another ride by himself. Jacob opted out of that one.
But we went on some more together, which he thought was fun then finally by himself. It was cute. We had a nice time.
Our neighbours stopped by this afternoon to see if Jacob could play. I love that. I love spontaneous visits. We hung out for a bit. Jacob and the little boy, Charlie had a nice time playing chase with flashlights which was nice to see.
We headed to the gym for a bit. Jacob got to play Connect Four which he called checkers. He remembers it from OMSI where there are two robots that you can move to play Connect Four. That was pretty exciting for him.
Just a few more days before we head out for Georgia!! It'll be nice to be on a long vacation with Fraser, plus visiting all the Southern family :)

Day 288

Jacob and I had a super packed morning. Amazingly, it went fantastically for both of us. We were up at 5:30 again. Joy. I'm up for two and a half hours before I can really even do anything productive outside the home. I feel like I've been up for forever but then look at the clock to realize it's only 8:15. Crazy.
We went to the gym first. Then headed across the street to this little ampitheatre area where they usually have a fountain. Today they had a magician doing a show. I think the program is connected to the library's summer reading program. There are several shows throughout these months. Anyway, we went to that. Funny and cute. Jacob was on the fence about it. Sometimes he wanted to leave, other times he was involved and laughing.
We headed over to the grocery store after the show but couldn't find plain pecans there. Bummer. Off to grocery store number two. On the way we stopped at a produce stand to get some (more) fresh, local strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Yes, we have berries coming out the wazoo but they are so good! Lastly, to Trader Joe's to get the pecans and whatnot. Whew. Jacob was such a helper the whole time! If all days could be like this.
Tonight, we'll be making a salad with beets, walnuts and goat cheese, some pork chops and I think some homemade strawberry shortcakes. Oh, deliciousness.

This weekend Fraser and Jacob made up a new game. Fraser would stand in the kitchen fling a beanie baby rat into Jacob who was on the couch.
"Incoming rat!" Fraser would yell.
"Outside rat marshmallow!" Jacob would yell back, laughing hysterically while flinging the rat off somewhere else. Yes, dangerous to play in the house and yes, too funny to make them stop.
"High five," Fraser says to Jacob while we're eating dinner last night. Nothing from Jacob.
"Jacob, how about a high five?" he asks again.
"No, I am eating right now," Jacob says, very politely. Fraser and I just look at each other and try not to bust a gut.
It's bathtime and the hyperness is setting in. Jacob and I go upstairs to start the bath, and he is running in and out of the bathroom, yelling. What is he yelling?
"Uuuunle MATT! Uuuuunlce MATT!"
I have no idea why but it was cracking him up.

Oh, yes, it has come to me - what we did on Friday. Well, one thing, at least. We went to visit Fraser at work for lunch. I really like doing that. It's nice to see Fraser during the day and nice for Jacob to see where he is all day and nice for Fraser to see us. Of course, Jacob remembers the robots we saw during the open house and wants to see those, which we can't on a normal basis, but... it was still a nice trip.
Sunday... Jacob was up really early today, crazy child. Like 5:30 early. We seem to be back to that schedule. Ugh. When Fraser got up, though, we went to the zoo together, which helped wake us up. That was very fun.
We got to see some different things. They brought out some snow for the polar bears and put it right up against the glass. Therefore the bears were right up close, too, which was neat. They are just massive creatures.
They have a dinosaur exhibit going on right now with automated dinosaurs. We skipped it today. I don't know that he'd really like it. There's a lot of loud roaring and fairly realistic dinos. Maybe we'll try it before the summer is over. We'll see. He liked riding this one enough for today.
We sat down for lunch right in time for a Birds of Prey show at the ampitheatre. I hadn't seen this before, and it was cool. They had several birds of prey that came flying in from the back of the grassy area or that came walking out and would then take flight out to some pedestals throughout the lawn area. Very neat. Jacob really liked it. They had a Red-Tail Hawk, Turkey Vulture, Harris Hawk, Eurasian Eagle Owl (which looks similar to a Great-Horned, and it has orange eyes!), Hooded Vulture and Bald Eagle.
We also made a trip over to the elephants. They had one male inside so we got to see him up close. Holy crap! I think I probably came up to his knee joint. He was huge. Incredible. There was a man giving some info about the elephant; the coolest thing I heard him say while we were there was that he once saw an elephant pick up one sunflower seed off the floor with his trunk. Dang.
I always feel most sad for the elephants at the zoos, though, because they are such intelligent and social creatures. I'm not all anti-zoo but there are times when I feel for the animals.
Jacob and Fraser had some nice play time in the afternoon after an all-too-short nap after such a looooong morning. I made a chard tart for dinner that was delishy!

Made it to the Farmer's Market this morning. Quick trip. The morning kind of got away from us. I Skyped with the family (who are all at the beach up in Traverse City) while Fraser was having a rest. Then Jacob was having a fit over changing his diaper. Finally, we made it, though. Got some yummy vegetables and fruit. The berries are starting to come in a lot more now, which is wonderful!
This is evening I went out with some of the moms from moms' group. We went to a place called The Observatory. A bit of a drive but nice casual little place. I had some delicious oregano fry bread and beer. It was only three of us ladies which turned out to be perfect. We had a chance to have some really nice conversations about parenting. I've definitely been feeling some parenting struggles these days, some with Jacob, some with Fraser. So it was really good to connect with some other moms and get some support. A parenting community is so, so necessary to this job. To get ideas, support, to be told you're not totally crazy. I'm very grateful to have it out here.
